Feathr

DECONSTRUCT

After receiving the brief from Feathr, I was interested to start this as I have never produced a repeat pattern and I am interested in how designing like this could turn out. Below is the brief and the specs needed. The width needs to be 1560px and the length is one vertical repeat of my design.

As the brief is very broad, and the main sentence "Your Brief: Make Wallpaper Into Art" clearly identifies what the brief is and what I have to do. It is simple yet effective as it does not give any sort of direction allowing the designer to experiment and work with ideas of their own and create a piece of design that is interesting and  works as a piece of wallpaper.

The specs show the size of design needs to be submitted, and the format of the submission if successful.

RESEARCH

Looking into types of wallpapers I find interesting, to see which type of format my design will take. These designs vary in types of design but these are the type of design that would influence the style of design I would produce.

I like the use of colour and little illustrations that make the wallpaper unique and special, instead of blending in with typical floral designs. These are a few pictures of wallpaper that I find interesting and work as wallpaper. The design needs to brighten up the room, become a talking point, but not end up being the main focus of the room.

INITIAL IDEAS

I started experimenting with lines, and creating a pattern that connects to create a further design. This design concept was something I worked on, the idea behind it, is organised mess, creating something that allows a framed item, however it is complete chaos, it doesn't have any flow, grid, or design decisions behind it, it is purely mess, however this then works within a grid, creating a frame for the creation, giving it a subtle look. I like this design however it does need a lot of work.

I removed the lines that connected the designs together, I believe this gives a cleaner feel to the design, the square that is being displayed is a lot clearer and easier to take in.

I started to experiment with the frame, and making variations to the organised mess to give different aesthetics and produce different frames. This was a bit of fun experiments I wanted to test out and if consumers liked the designs, I would take them further.

These experiments were just quick mock ups experimenting with frames and the idea of organised mess. I didn't really have any sketches or initial ideas for these designs I just wanted to take the design and see where the experiments take me. After drawing a line at the experiments, and getting a bit bored of creating this organised mess, I started to experiment with different concepts.

After playing pool recently and looking at the various colours and aspects of a pool table, I couldn't stay away from this idea so I decided to mock up and experiment with various pool experiments, playing around with the layout and the different aspects such as the triangle of balls and the pool cues.

After compiling all the initial sketches and designs, and making a judgement to my previous designs. I wanted to try something different. My grandad really likes monkeys and as christmas was fast approaching, I wanted to create a piece of design that could be used and given as a piece of art, whilst being wallpaper. I wanted to design something that could be used as a piece of art,

DIGITAL DESIGNS

After gathering all my digital designs and giving it to a group of people from my class, I received enough  feedback to make the decision that the monkey on bamboo made the design too busy to be placed on a wall. The design needs a simple, and relaxed aesthetic to fit onto the wall.

After comparing the vectors, it also became apparent that the two types of design don't work as a set, with the banana being more tonal, and simple, and the bamboo becomes a separation to the banana that doesn't really fit with the design.

For the colours I wanted to pick a colour that contrasted and made the design stand out when seen.

I picked these tone of yellows for the banana, which allowed shading and tonal aspects to the design, then the blue below supplies the backdrop.

I altered the design and removed the bamboo giving a cleaner, flowing aesthetic and leads your eyes along the wall with the shape of the banana directing you.

With the design already set up to repeat, I needed a gridded repeat which allowed the bananas to repeat along the the wall, also down the wall.

I picked a wall layout that showed the full potential of the wallpaper, instead of cutting the design off at a point, it has a 3 sectioned repeat of the design.

I submitted the design into feather which showed both the repeat section, and the mock up to show the viewers how the design would look when placed onto a wall.

EVALUATION

After completing feather, and the opportunity it gave me to experiment and produce a design that was different. I liked the freedom of this brief which allowed me to plan, organise, and experiment with different ideas. I received feedback and developed my idea further. I enjoyed my time completing this brief and felt relaxed and determined as this was a portray to me as a designer as it is down to me to produce a piece of work that I deemed aesthetic enough to be placed on a wall and seen everyday by consumers.
